About

Thanks for checking out my site!

I am an early-career researcher, currently based in London, researching and writing about Shakespeare and early modern drama, theatre archives, performance and media history.  At the moment I work as a postdoctoral research associate on the AHRC-funded project Shakespeare in the Royal Collections at King’s College London.

My book Still Shakespeare and the Photography of Performance is available from Cambridge University Press. It examines the place of photography in the reception of the Shakespeare canon since the invention of the camera, and how photographs have influenced perceptions of Shakespearean performance, character and cultural authority.

My forthcoming work includes an issue of Borrowers and Lenders co-edited with Nora J. Williams.

My interests include:

  • early modern drama
  • Shakespeare’s afterlife from the 18th century onwards
  • political and ideological uses of Shakespeare
  • performance archives and material culture
  • media history, especially photography

I’m always happy to talk about future projects and potential collaborations. Feel free to email me at sarah.barnden@kcl.ac.uk or find me on Twitter as @sally_barnden
